In early June 1943 SEA1 Wlodkowski’s mother received a telegram informing her that her son was “swept overboard by a huge wave” while working with a group in the forecastle.  Every effort was made to effect a rescue with two destroyers being dispatched in search of the body but “it is presumed that your son downed immediately”
