Bronze Star Medal.  The citation reads “For heroic achievement in military operations against the enemy.  At Negros, Philippine Islands, on May 18, 1945, Sergt Carenzo was a squad leader that operated with guerrilla forces several miles behind enemy lines.  About 10.30 the platoon launched an attack up a steep and narrow ridge.  Sergt Carenzo’s squad was leading, but when they had nearly reached the top of their objective, the enemy opened fire with several machine guns.  The entire platoon was under fire and action had to be taken at once to effect a successful withdrawal.  Sergt Carenzo so skillfully employed his squad that the platoon was able to withdraw with only one light casualty.”
