A soldier that was with Private Handley wrote a letter to the family informing them how he died. The letter states that during a heavy fire by the Germans, Private Handley, without regard to his own safety, rushed out in the open to assist a wounded companion. While he was in the act of raising the wounded soldier to carry him out of danger, he was shot by machine gun fire. After the battle, Private Handley’s body was found lying across the body of his friend.
